Nang Kham Cooking in her home in Ban Sop Doud

One of my earlier pictures on this project.
i visited Ban Sop Doud, a Lantien village about 12 Km south of Luang Namtha on the river, during a boat trip organised by the Provincial Toursim Office. I photographed Nang Kham on this first visit (pic 21), printed it a couple of weeks later in Bangkok (Printing quality in 2004 was still very basic in Laos), and on my next visit a week after that, I came back to her village and presented her wth her portrait.

She seemed very pleased. I left my laptop on her porch outside, and when she excused herself to go and tend to her meal cooking inside her house, I asked if I could take her photograph while cooking. I used a tripod because of low lightlevels ( in those days digital cameras couldn't cope with anything beyond 100 ISO), but outside the kids were jumping up and down on the porch, excited about the slideshow on my laptop, so the whole building was vibrating.
I took 20 exposures at about a third of a second, one was (almost) sharp enough to print.
Still one of my favourites.
